The different Breeds of Hairless Cats What is a sphynx The Sphynx, also commonly referred to by many as the “Egyptian Cat,” originates from Canada from a natural mutation in a litter of Domestic Shorthaired cats. The breeds bloodlines were expanded upon by crossbreeding with the American Shorthair, Domestic Shorthair, the Russian blue and the Devon Rex. The Sphynx most remarkable trait is that it lacks fur, yet they can have a scanty amount of fuzz on the ears, face, tail, and or feet. Sphynx have a narrow, long head. Body is usually well defined and muscular, webbed feet an over extended belly often referred to as a “Pot Belly.” What is an Elf The Elf cat was successfully developed from crossing the Sphynx and American Curl cat. Each of these breeds has a single distinctive trait, and the Elf cat was designed to combine them. The most distinctive features of this cat, are the appearance of curled ears, taken from the American Curl, and the hairlessness, taken from the Sphynx. However, like the Sphynx, the Elf cat is not actually completely hairless; its skin may be covered with a very fine fur that’s practically imperceptible to both the eye and by touch. They look is almost identical to that of the sphynx in facial and body standards with exception of the curled ear. What is a Bambino Perhaps one of the most cute and adorable of all the hairless breeds is the Bambino Cat. The name "Bambino," which signifies "child" in Italian, was given to these short cats in light of the fact that, when completely grown, they are dwarf in size. The bambino cat was produced from an outcross between the Sphynx and the Munchkin breed. Their upper body and facial features are almost identical to the sphynx cat. However, their stature is the single most remarkable feature, other than the hairlessness, obtained from the combination of the two breeds. They are known to be of very short stature, slightly smaller in size and weight when compared to the sphynx. Their legs are distinctively short and muscular with a pronounced muscular chest. What is a Dwelf The rarest and most unique of all the hairless breeds is the Dwelf cat. The Dwelf cat was developed by crossing the Bambino Cat to the Elf cat. The sphynx breed is the foundation breed of both of these breeds; therefore, the Dwelf kittens produced by the crossing will all share the hairless trait of the sphynx. However, this crossing also combines the short stature of the bambino cat with the curled ears of the elf cat, hence the name "dwelf," short for short Elf.
